Iksan City in Jeonbuk Province is transforming the old market parking lot into a vibrant pocha (street bar) festival venue to beat the summer heat with the ‘Iriwa Pocha Festival.’ The festival, organized by the Iksan Old Market Cultural Tourism Promotion Committee and the Merchants Association, will take place on June 14 and 15 from 5 PM onwards at the Nambu Market parking lot.
Festival Name
- The name ‘Iriwa Pocha Festival’ combines Iksan’s old name ‘Iri’ and the Korean phrase ‘Come here,’ playing on the double meaning.
Key Food Offerings
- Over 60 types of pocha foods including golbaengi muchim (spicy whelk salad), gyeran mari (rolled omelette), sundae bokkeum (stir-fried blood sausage), haemul pajeon (seafood pancake), and dubu kimchi (tofu with kimchi) will be available.
- Despite the generous portions, the dishes are priced around 10,000 won, offering great value for money.
- Additional BBQ and food truck zones will provide more dining options.
Main Programs
- In collaboration with local company HiteJinro, refreshing alcoholic beverages will be offered at affordable prices.
- Visitor participation events such as singing contests and dance battles, along with performances by singers and DJs, will add to the excitement.
- Using the local currency, the DaeRoUm card, at the festival will earn an extra 10% credit, providing up to 20% discount benefits.
Preparations
- To ensure a successful festival, the city recruited food vendors over three weeks and provided essential hygiene and safety training.
- Yu Geun-woo, head of the Old Market Merchants Association, said, “We have prepared thoroughly to ensure the festival is satisfying in terms of hygiene, price, taste, and fun.”
City Official Statement
- An Iksan city official stated, “We have worked hard to prepare an event that offers safe and healthy food as well as enjoyable activities. We hope this festival will revitalize the traditional market and promote the coexistence of the old market and Nambu Market, leading to the continued expansion of the festival.”
The ‘Iriwa Pocha Festival’ in Iksan is ready to offer a cool and enjoyable summer night with a variety of foods and programs. We look forward to your interest and participation.
