The 13th Gwangju Independent Film Festival will feature 28 outstanding domestic and international films over four days. This year’s theme, “Tanning with Movie Light,” invites audiences to immerse themselves in a diverse range of films.

Highlights:

  • Opening Film: “My Name” by director Song Won-jae, screening on July 27 at 7:30 PM at Gwangju Theater. This expanded version of the short film “Common Name” delves deeper into the stories of Minseo and Seoyeon.
  • Quebec National Day Section: Featuring Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed film “Incendies” on July 28 at 1 PM, which explores the history of civil war and a Canadian twin’s journey to their mother’s homeland in the Middle East.
  • Made in Gwangju: Showcasing new works by Gwangju filmmakers, including “Made in Gwangju: NEXT 10,” where students direct and star in their own films.
    May Story Theme: On July 28 at 7 PM, two films will be screened: “1980, Losch and Sobel,” about foreign photojournalists during the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, and “D-Day Friday,” capturing the heat of professional baseball in Gwangju in 1984.
  • New Directors’ Showcase: On July 30 at 10:30 AM, introducing first works by emerging directors from Gwangju.
  • Yang Joo-yeon Retrospective: On July 30 at 2 PM, featuring “The Shadow of Yangdong,” “Song of Tomorrow,” “Rooftop Mark,” and “40.”
  • Closing Film: “I Love Azaleas” by director Kim Kyung-ja, detailing the resistance and exile activities of 5·18 Gwangju Uprising figure Yoon Han-bong.

Additional Activities:

  • Post-screening Q&A sessions (GV) with filmmakers.
  • “Scenario Pitching” and “Gwangju Filmmakers’ Night” sponsored by Gorilla Fund.

Admission: Opening film and May Story screenings are free; other screenings cost 5,000 KRW. Tickets can be purchased on the Gwangju Independent Film Theater GIFT website.
