The 2024 Wonju Dumpling Festival will be held from October 25 to 27 at Jungang-dong Traditional Market and Munhwa Street. This year’s main theme is “Wonju Dumpling Road Taste Pilgrimage,” with the slogan “Wonju, the Dumpling Sanctuary.” The festival aims to successfully connect traditional markets and tourism, revitalizing the old downtown area.
Last year’s dumpling festival took place in late October at Wonju Free Market, Doraemi Market, and Jungang Market, featuring various themed areas. The city of Wonju estimated that the festival brought about 10 billion KRW in economic benefits. The festival attracted a total of 200,000 visitors, with 51.6% coming from outside the region. The primary visitor demographic was the 20-30 age group, making up 63.6% of attendees.
The history of Wonju dumplings dates back to the 1950s, shortly after the Korean War. Refugees and merchants began making dumplings using flour provided by the US military and sold them at the Wonju Station market. This tradition has been passed down through generations.
